Edinson Cavani predicted to be "more important" to Man Utd than people think

Former Chelsea and Tottenham midfielder Gus Poyet has suggested Edinson Cavani could surprise a few people at Manchester United this season.

The 33-year-old Uruguayan striker signed on a free transfer on deadline day but has had to stay patient for his chance to impress at the club, with all five of his appearances so far coming from off the bench.

He got off the mark for the Red Devils with a late goal against Everton last weekend, however, and could make his first start when United take on West Brom next weekend.

And speaking to the Daily Mail, Cavani's fellow compatriot Poyet stated his belief that he has all the ingredients needed to succeed in England.

"I think he is going to be more important for Manchester United than people think," Poyet said.

"Look at the last game at Everton. The result was in the balance, he came off the bench, once chance and bang.

"English football is perfect for Uruguayans because we are passionate. Once we sign a contract, we forget about it because the only thing that matters next is winning. English fans love that."

Poyet believes Cavani will only get better the fitter he gets, and pinpointed his work off the ball as one of his most impressive attributes.

"He makes an incredible amount of runs," Poyet added.

"Maybe he makes an unbelievable run and the ball isn't played. The fitter he gets, the more he understands United's play, the more he will play."

Cavani is currently on international duty, and scored the opener in Uruguay's 3-0 win against Colombia in their World Cup qualifier on Friday.

And he is expected to feature again when they take on Brazil on Tuesday before he returns to Manchester to focus on impressing in the Premier League.
