Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has given Manchester United fans a shred of hope ahead of the summer transfer window. Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag went all out to sign the Dutchman last year but ultimately fell short, and De Jong discussed the possibility of a move to Old Trafford at the weekend.

United and Barca even got as far as agreeing on a fee last summer, but De Jong consistently maintained that he wanted to continue his childhood dream of playing at the Nou Camp. Casemiro was eventually signed instead, and the Brazilian has been a smash hit under Ten Hag.

De Jong has been similarly impactful this campaign after staying with Barca, appearing in all but two La Liga matches as Xavi’s side sit 12 points clear at the top of the table.

They took a big step towards the title on Sunday by beating bitter rivals Real Madrid 2-1, with Franck Kessie’s stoppage-time strike sealing a dramatic El Clasico triumph.

After the final whistle, De Jong was once again asked whether a move to United could be on the cards this summer, to which he responded: “You never know, of course.” The 25-year-old did, however, reiterate his desire to stay with the Spanish giants.

“I’m very happy in Barcelona,” he added. “From the summer until now it has improved for me here. I play almost every game, it makes me feel so satisfied. I am a better player now than what I was when I signed for Barca.”

Although summer signings Casemiro and Christian Eriksen have both made telling impacts on United’s season, Ten Hag is thought to be keen on going after another midfielder this summer. De Jong worked with the United boss at Ajax and could well be the subject of fresh transfer interest from the Premier League.

The Red Devils are also rumoured to be in the hunt for Borussia Dortmund and England extraordinaire Jude Bellingham. Reports indicate that United’s interest has ramped up in recent weeks, with Liverpool thought to be slipping behind in the race.

On the same night De Jong celebrated a crucial El Clasico victory, United also had reason to feel positive as they came from behind to beat Fulham 3-1, booking their spot in the FA Cup semi-finals in the process.

Two goals from Bruno Fernandes and another from Marcel Sabitzer helped down the Cottagers on Sunday to push the club towards more silverware, with another trip to Wembley now in the diary. Ten Hag has already ended United’s long trophy drought by picking up the Carabao Cup last month.
