Christian Eriksen and Harry Maguire show true colours as Fulham star sobs

Fulham v Man Utd: Pictures

Manchester United duo Harry Maguire and Christian Eriksen showed their true colours on Saturday afternoon as they consoled injured Fulham ace Rodrigo Muniz. The Red Devils pair attempted to comfort the Fulham player as he limped off the pitch in tears during the second half.

Muniz was handed his first Premier League start after scoring in Fulham’s Carabao Cup victory over Ipswich on Wednesday. And he showed moments of energy as Fulham and United cancelled each other out for virtually the entire match.

Disaster struck for the 22-year-old, however, when he was forced off with an injury 14 minutes from the end as Carlos Vinícius came on to replace him. And the problem appeared to be severe as the Brazilian striker was in floods of tears as he made his way off the pitch.

Maguire quickly noticed Muniz’s distress and imparted some words of encouragement as he caressed the player’s head as the duo found themselves next to each other. And Eriksen also reached out to the South American.

United had come into the match at Craven Cottage off the back of a dismal run of form and had suffered defeat in five of their first 10 Premier League matches of the campaign. The Red Devils had been defeated 3-0 by Manchester City at Old Trafford last weekend and were then humbled by the same scoreline during a home Carabao Cup showdown with Newcastle in midweek.

And for much of the contest in west London, it appeared as though United would be unable to return to winning ways. But after being frustrated by Fulham for 91 minutes, the Red Devils finally found a breakthrough as Facundo Pellistri teed-up Bruno Fernandes for the winning goal.

The victory temporarily moved United up to sixth in the Premier League table. And after the match, goalscorer Fernandes said: “Everyone knows the situation is not the best. We had to deliver today and we got the three points.

“It’s about the team. It’s about what everyone does on the pitch – it was a game where everyone sacrificed themselves and worked hard. Even on the goal you could see that all the players were fighting to [keep Fulham penned in]. That’s what made the goal.

“I think it was a good performance. We could create more chances but we had control of the game in the first half. In the second half it was more even. Overall we had the biggest chances and I think we deserved the win.”
