Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard has reportedly been in contact with Ross Barkley over the midfielder’s future at Stamford Bridge. The Blues star sealed a season-long loan to Aston Villa in the summer transfer window, after falling down the pecking order following Chelsea’s new arrivals.
Barkley has scored 11 goals for Chelsea in 86 appearances since joining the Blues from Everton in January 2018.
He made three appearances for Chelsea this season prior to making the loan move to Villa, featuring against Brighton and Liverpool in the Premier League, before scoring a goal in the 6-0 win against Barnsley in the Carabao Cup.
However, he was allowed to move on loan to Villa after that, and he is already making quite the impression in the Midlands.
Dean Smith’s side sit sixth in the Premier League, with Barkley playing a key role in impressive wins over Leicester, Liverpool and Arsenal.
The former Everton midfieler’s impressive form at Villa Park has seen renewed calls for him to be called up to the England squad, as well as Chelsea to give him regular minutes next season.
And according to Eurosport, Blues boss Lampard has contacted the player to make it clear how impressed he has been with his performances so far.
The report claims the door remains open for Barkley at Stamford Bridge if the remainder of his loan spell continues in the same fashion.
Despite having N’Golo Kante, Jorginho, Mason Mount and Mateo Kovacic as midfield options, former Arsenal star Paul Merson claims Lampard was wrong to send Barkley out on loan.
“Frank Lampard has made a mistake sending Ross Barkley out on loan because he will be a superstar for Aston Villa,” Merson told the Daily Star.
“What a signing that is. I can’t quite believe it, if I’m honest. How Barkley doesn’t get in the Chelsea team beats me. He is a huge talent. To let him go like this, especially to another Premier League team, is a dangerous game by Frank.
“If Barkley hits the ground running and starts ripping it up for Villa then serious questions will be asked why Lampard let him go.
“Chelsea have loads of midfielders. But Jorginho and Matteo Kovacic can’t go past people like Ross Barkley can.”
Barkley himself has previously admitted that he models his game on Lampard, and hailed the Chelsea legend.
“For me as a young player you look up to the likes of the gaffer for what he achieved,” Barkley told talkSPORT in the summer.
“Watching Match of the Day as a kid you were constantly seeing the gaffer score plenty of goals.
“Being a midfielder myself you modelled your game on the likes of the gaffer, Paul Scholes and Steven Gerrard – the England and Premier League legends.”
On Lampard, he added: “The gaffer has a good relationship with all the players, including myself.
“He encourages us to play our game and in training he encourages us to get in the box as a midfield player, like myself, Ruben [Loftus-Cheek], Mason [Mount] to try and create goals and help out the team defensively as well.”
