Chelsea can win the Premier League title this season if they sign an “excellent” goalkeeper before the end of the transfer window, according to former Republic of Ireland striker Clinton Morrison. Chelsea have made six signings so far this summer, spending over £200million in the process. They are in the market for a goalkeeper following the disappointing campaign for Kepa Arrizabalaga last season.
A number of goalkeepers have been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge but it appears Rennes No 1 Edouard Mendy will be the player Lampard plumps for.
It remains to be seen whether the 28-year-old will replace Arrizabalaga straight away or provide competition for the Spain international.
But Morrison says improving in that area will make Chelsea serious title challengers as early as this season.
“Personally, I think they should be challenging with the signings that they’ve made,” Morrison told talkSPORT.

“I do believe if they get a goalkeeper, they will massively be challenging.
“I think that’s where they’re struggling at the moment. That’s not me having a go at Kepa, I just feel when you want to win titles, your goalkeeper has to be excellent.

“You look at Liverpool, Alisson – outstanding. When Man City won it, Ederson – outstanding. So your backline has to be really strong.
“I think they’ve got a great opportunity but they can’t finish outside the top four.

“You can’t spend that amount of money and finish outside the top four because they’ll be huge pressure for Frank Lampard.
“I think winning a trophy this season, whatever trophy, I think will help Frank Lampard as well.
“But I know for a fact, he won’t come out and say it, but when you’re in the changing room as players amongst the management staff, they’ll be pushing to try and win the Premier League.”
Meanwhile, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher claims Chelsea cannot win the league with Arrizabalaga and also has doubts over 35-year-old recruit Thiago Silva.
“It will be a great watch but until they sort out the goalkeeping situation and centre-back to be honest,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“I love Thiago Silva, he’s been fantastic, but to come to the Premier League at 35, almost 36 I think in a couple of weeks, is a tough ask.
“We’ve seen players like Laurent Blanc come play with Gary [Neville] who was a World Cup winner and found it tough when he came, so it’s not easy to come.
“Thiago Silva won’t win the league with Kepa behind him.”
