Chelsea supporters furious with loan star Colwill’s actions during Man Utd rout

Chelsea caretaker manager Frank Lampard reviews Manchester United game

Chelsea were soundly beaten 4-1 by Manchester United at Old Trafford on Thursday as Frank Lampard’s side suffered another crushing defeat, and at the same time, one of their loan stars dropped a huge hint over his own future with an ill-timed social media post. The Blues crumbled in the second half to suffer another damaging loss to leave them stranded in the bottom half, but the image of Levi Colwill beaming during their plight may hurt even more.

The defender has spent the season with Brighton after sent out on loan to gain first-team experience, and the 20-year-old has been an impressive performer in Roberto De Zerbi’s team this year.

However, his actions on social media may be viewed in a different light, with Chelsea fans far from happy with the centre-back.

During Thursday night’s game at Old Trafford, a fan tweeted Colwill to ask about “how his evening was going”. Colwill responded by uploading an image of himself and former Chelsea starlet Billy Gilmour with the caption: “Brilliant!”

The pair appeared to be in celebratory mode after the Seagulls secured Europa League football next season for the first time in their history, with Colwill smiling while Gilmour was wearing sunglasses with cocktails pictured on the table next to them.

However, the timing of the post – during Chelsea’s capitulation against the Red Devils – only rubbed further salt into the wound after a painful result in Manchester.

Several fans interpreted his photo as a thinly-veiled swipe towards the club as Colwill has been linked with a permanent switch away from Chelsea this summer.

One user, @MrCaseyC_, wrote: “This is the kind of energy we don’t need in our dressing room next season. He should stay at Brighton”, while @GalGallo_CFC said: “Can we just sell Levi Colwill please?”

@Tekanomo_ tweeted: “I think Chelsea should swap Colwill for Caicedo. Colwill doesn’t want to come back to this team, Caicedo wants to leave. Let’s add like £35-40m to Colwill and get Caicedo from them.”

However, some fans leapt to his defence by claiming it was an innocuous post, with Brighton simply celebrating their sixth-placed finish. @cfc_sense wrote: “Colwill was not belittling Chelsea. He is clearly on night out with and still in celebratory mode with Brighton. Nothing, other than timing of defeat, links it to Chelsea.”

The centre-back, who emerged through the club’s academy at Cobham, is being monitored by Liverpool and Manchester City, while Brighton would be keen to keep him permanently at the Amex Stadium.

But Chelsea view him as an important part of their future plans, explaining why they insisted on a loan deal rather than a permanent one when arranging his move to Brighton in August 2022. And it could take a huge fee to prise him away from Stamford Bridge as he faces a potentially awkward reunion with his team-mates in June.
