Newcastle could make a move for Chelsea loanee Andrey Santos in an attempt to replace Sandro Tonali, according to reports. A potential deal for the Brazilian youngster would have to overcome a couple of obstacles first.
Newcastle face the prospect of being without Tonali for a substantial period of time. The Italy international admitted this week to making bets on former club AC Milan when he was at the San Siro.
He could be slapped with a FIFA ban of up to three years. The 23-year-old is likely to get a lesser sentence for pleading guilty and helping with the investigation.
But Eddie Howe knows he will be without the £55million signing for the immediate future. Newcastle could turn to the January transfer market in an attempt to increase their options in the middle of the park.

Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips has already been linked with a move to St James’ Park. But a report from TeamTalk claims Santos could also be a target.
It is reported that Newcastle were keen on Santos before he joined Chelsea earlier this year. The teenager is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest but GiveMeSport claimed recently that his time at the City Ground could be cut short.
He is yet to play a single minute in the Premier League under Steve Cooper, making the bench on just four occasions. Santos impressed during pre-season at Chelsea and Mauricio Pochettino wanted him to gain further experience at a top-flight club.
It hasn’t gone quite to plan and Chelsea could cancel the deal and look at different options for the 19-year-old. Another stumbling block Newcastle face is they already have a player on loan from the Blues.

Premier League rules state you can only take one player on loan at a time from a specific club. Newcastle have Lewis Hall, who is set to make the move permanent next summer.
Hall joined on loan with an obligation to buy, with add-ons taking a potential deal to £35m. Newcastle would have to make the move permanent earlier than planned if they were to pursue Santos on loan.
Chelsea would likely not entertain permanent offers for Santos, a player they rate extremely highly. They announced last January that they had agreed a deal to sign the young star from Vasco da Gama.
He remained on loan with the Brazilian outfit as he couldn’t get a work permit until this summer. Santos played for Chelsea on the pre-season tour to the USA before completing his move to Forest.
