Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has admitted he doesn’t know whether he made the correct decision in hauling off Callum Hudson-Odoi against Southampton. The 20-year-old came off the bench during the draw with Saints, only to be dragged off 30 minutes later.

The move drew criticism from neutrals, as Tuchel made his first really contentious decision in the Blues dugout.

The former Paris Saint-Germain boss has claimed the matter is now forgotten. And while the England international has responded well, Tuchel has suggested he may have made a mistake.

“We decided to speak to him in front of the whole group, I had my reasons to do it,” he said in his press conference ahead of the clash with Atletico Madrid.

“Was it the right decision? I don’t know but it was my decision at this moment.

“For us, we spoke as a whole group to not make it bigger than it is because for us it was not a big thing.”

He added: “I know that it could be and sometimes you reflect on why you do it and whether you should do it because sometimes maybe the media and family make it bigger than it was meant. So I did it and we had the only reaction that we wanted.

“He went back to a normal mood, to a good mood, to a smile, and to training and the next day. He was very, very good in training and today. And that’s it.

“I already said after the game this was the decision for today, this was the lesson to learn from today for him and for me also. We go on and it is forgotten.

“That is absolutely the way so in here at Cobham, between us, between us two, between me and the team business as usual and no big thing.”

The move has divided opinion with BBC pundit Garth Crooks warning Tuchel ‘needs to be careful’, while Jamie Carragher felt the decision was ‘very harsh’.

“My problem with the manager is not bringing him off and not what he said after the game. I think it was not right to bring him off,” Carragher said on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.

“We don’t know exactly why he brought him off, but sometimes a manager sees one thing and wants to make a change.

“I think it was very harsh to bring him off.

“But it will send a message to Callum Hudson-Odoi and it will send a message to anyone who comes off the bench as a sub that they have to impact the game. And he never impacted the game enough.”

Hudson Odoi is expected to be involved in Tuesday night’s Champions League class with La Liga leaders Atleti.

Thiago Silva will once again be unavailable, Tuchel confirmed the Brazilian has returned to some form of training, but is not yet ready to be thrown back into competitive action.

Elsewhere, Chelsea confirmed that Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic will both be in the squad for the game taking place in Bucharest.
