‘No fear at home’ | Mauricio Pochettino reviews Chelsea’s win against Sheffield United
Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has insisted it doesn’t matter that Premier League high-flyers Manchester City and Arsenal have already been knocked out of the Carabao Cup as the Blues are their “own worst enemies”. Chelsea have endured a miserable campaign under the Argentine but have reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, where they will host Newcastle on Tuesday night.
Chelsea and Liverpool are the only ‘big six’ teams left in the competition, with all the others already falling by the wayside. But when Pochettino was asked about the composition of the last eight ahead of his team’s showdown with Newcastle, he replied: “I am not so happy because if you want to win the competition, we need to win the competition against us.
“We are our own worst enemies. We have the possibility and we are ready to compete and fight in every single action, win the duels, and anticipate the things to be faster and stronger than them. At the moment, we are in a project where we are fighting against ourselves to be better.”
Pochettino, who won 20 caps for Argentina during his playing days, went on to discuss the importance of the Carabao Cup as he continued: “I don’t know which people are saying ‘Mickey Mouse Cup’ but, to be honest with you, we are not feeling this way.

“It is a really good opportunity to win. I saw for more than 10 years how clubs celebrate winning this cup. It is one of our objectives. We are taking it seriously and we are going to put out the best team possible as if we are playing for a final or for our lives.”
Pochettino has only won six of his 17 Premier League matches in charge of Chelsea and has seen his side fall to 10th in the top-flight table. But the 51-year-old has targeted Carabao Cup success in an attempt to kickstart his tenure at Stamford Bridge.

“You need to be in the right club, in the right moment, with all of the elements to win,” the former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain boss explained. “To be an elite manager, it is not necessary to win titles.
“It is important to analyse every single project and say you can progress or not or deliver the job everyone expects. It is important, more than us, for the club because it is going to be a boost and energy and I really believe in the project.”
