Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has been blamed for his side’s recent struggles. Ally McCoist claims the Argentine must look at himself in the mirror after picking up just five points from his first six Premier League games in charge.
Pochettino oversaw a major overhaul of the Chelsea squad in his first transfer window in charge. The Blues’ spending since Todd Boehly bought the club in May 2022 surpassed the £1billion mark.
However, that has not resulted in an improvement in performance on the pitch. Chelsea sit 14th in the table, with just one win to their name against struggling Luton Town.
Pochettino’s squad has been ravaged by injury problems, with captain Reece James not featuring since the opening day and summer signings Christopher Nkunku and Romeo Lavia yet to make their first outings for the club. But McCoist still doesn’t think Pochettino has selected his best XI available.

Ben Chilwell has been a substitute in the last two matches against Bournemouth and Aston Villa. McCoist says there is no doubt that Chilwell should be playing.
He said on talkSPORT: “You’ve got to play your strongest team and Ben Chilwell is in Chelsea’s strongest team. I don’t care what anybody says.
“So there has to be a level of criticism at the feet of Poch, I don’t think he’s playing his strongest team. Yes, he’s got injuries.”
Chelsea get respite from league action when they welcome Brighton to Stamford Bridge in the Carabao Cup this evening. Striker Nicolas Jackson is in need of a goal after netting just once since his summer arrival from Villarreal.

McCoist doubts whether Jackson is the answer up front and says Pochettino needs a new frontman, even with Chelsea’s expenditure being so high in recent windows. He added: “He needs a centre-forward, Jackson I like, doesn’t look as though he’s going to score a lot of goals, do you know what I mean?
“With top-class finishers, they make it look as if they’ve got another wee split second right just before they finish. Jackson looks miles off it at this stage. It might come, but he looks miles off it.
“I know he’s got injuries up front, [Armando] Broja was on the bench, he came on against Villa. They’re sadly lacking a centre-forward.
“But you’ve got to cut them slack, got to give them time. Dramatic changes were needed in the squad, dramatic changes were made in the squad. But you’ve got to start winning games.”
