Carragher highlights one Arsenal player who "cost" them Champions League spot

Jamie Carragher reckons Arsenal have one man to blame when it comes to who was responsible for their late-season crash.

Three defeats in a row in the Premier League saw the Gunners drop from fourth to fifth and relinquish a spot in the Champions League as a result. The most damaging was a loss to Tottenham, who overtook them in the league as a result.

It left a bitter taste in Mikel Arteta's mouth, who has gone on a spending spree to rectify the errors while several players have been carted out. That includes Nuno Tavares, who has joined Marseille on loan for the season just a year into his Gunners career.

And Carragher reckons that the Portuguese star is the reason behind Arsenal's shoddy form, starting two of the three defeats that they suffered as they fell into a Europa League spot. The Liverpool legend told Sky Sports: "Nuno Tavares has gone out on loan, I saw.

"I think if they had a better left-back, then you probably would be in the top four now. I don’t like singling one player out, but I just think he cost you in certain games.

"I remember that game at Crystal Palace last season, it was on Monday Night Football and I said on TV: 'He has to come off at half-time'. I think he [ Mikel Arteta ] put Granit Xhaka at left-back in the end."

Oleksandr Zinchenko has arrived to replace Tavares from Manchester City but Arteta has insisted he wants the Ukrainian to play in midfield. It leaves Kieran Tierney as the only left-back, whose injury troubles have cost Arsenal in the past.

Gabriel Jesus and Fabio Vieira have also signed for the Gunners in an exciting summer with Marquinhos and Matt Turner arriving as well. But Arteta is not done yet and there are moves planned for the likes of Youri Tielemans and Jarrod Bowen
