Brighton and Hove Albion fans chanted "We want a replay” after being controversially denied a penalty against Liverpool.
With the score at 2-1, the Seagulls thought they were going to get a spot-kick after Kaoru Mitoma’s cross ricocheted off Virgil van Dijk’s thigh and hit his arm. All Brighton players, coaching staff and fans screamed at referee Anthony Talyor, but the Premier League official was unconvinced.
VAR had a brief look at the incident, but they chose to not send Taylor to the pitchside monitor. After the decision did not go their way, Brighton fans had their own dig at Jurgen Klopp, who recently said his side should replay their match against Tottenham Hotspur. A high-profile miscommunication error between the on-pitch officials and the VAR team resulted in their opening goal being disallowed in that match.

Seagulls supporters at the Amex Stadium chanted “we want a replay” over and over again after Taylor refused to point to the spot. While Brighton fans were tongue-in-cheek, lots of rival supporters believe they should have got a penalty.
“A stonewall penalty, if not for the handball then for the fact that Mitoma was physically thrown off the ball. The officials are scared to make a decision against Liverpool in case Klopp complains,” one angry Seagulls fan said.

“Stonewall pen! But, it doesn’t matter, Liverpool won’t get a decision against them again all season,” a second added. A third tweeted: “Premier league handball decisions are so confusing, Brighton denied a penalty but a similar handball was awarded against United last season. There is something wrong here.”
Klopp expressed his opinion his side’s loss to Ange Postecoglou’s side should be replayed, after the PGMOL released audio from the VAR studios revealing the moment officials not realising the on-field decision on Luis Diaz’s goal was offside; resulting in the VAR team saying: “check complete” and the on-field officials restarting the game by giving Spurs a freekick.
“All the people involved – on-field ref, linesman, fourth official and especially now in this case VAR – they didn’t do that on purpose. We shouldn’t forget that. It was an obvious mistake and I think there would have been solutions for it afterwards," he said.
“If not, I can say immediately, and probably some people don’t want me to say it, not as the manager of Liverpool but much more as a football person, I think the only outcome should be a replay. That’s how it is. It probably will not happen. The argument against that will probably be if you open that gate then everybody will ask for it. I think the situation is that unprecedented that a replay would be the right thing.”
