Bonkers dramatic game in 2019 was one of Spurs’ great nights – and Pep’s worst

Pep Guardiola looked like he'd seen a ghost – while Mauricio Pochettino resembled someone whose Christmases had all come at once.

The contrast between the respective bosses was stark indeed. It was the night of April 17, 2019 and somehow Tottenham had just knocked Manchester City out of the Champions League on away goals, to reach their first ever semi-final.

Spurs would produce another miracle to beat Ajax and make the final, before losing to Liverpool in Madrid. Guardiola, meanwhile, must have gone back to his Manchester apartment and locked himself in a darkened room. Another quest to conquer Europe had been brought to a shuddering and unexpected halt.

It was a bonkers night of unrelenting drama at the Etihad. Raheem Sterling and Son Heung-min both scored twice in a fizzing first half, which also saw Bernardo Silva cancel out the South Korean's second goal. Sergio Aguero put City ahead in the tie, but the drama wasn't even close to being finished.

Five goals had been scored in the opening 21 minutes, which had never happened in the Champions League before. Fernando Llorente's unorthodox finish was awarded following a long VAR check. But what appeared to be the decisive goal in stoppage time from Sterling was ruled out, after Aguero was ruled to be offside in the build up.

When the final whistle blew Guardiola sunk to his knees on the sidelines, like the lead role in a bad, bad dream. Pochettino charged onto the pitch to hug his stars, who then came together as a group in front of their families and club directors to celebrate like mad men. The Argentine couldn't quite believe what had happened.

"I have never heard noise like that since I have been in Manchester. But football is unpredictable," said Guardiola afterwards.

‌Pochettino – now manager of Spurs' rivals Chelsea – had a smile from ear-to-ear as he walked into the media room afterwards. "It was unbelievable," he said. "That is why we love football."

It was indeed a true classic. The two teams meet again at the Etihad today (Sunday) in the Premier League, when the stakes will be much lower. But if it's even half as entertaining as four years ago, supporters are in for quite a treat.
