Arsenal are preparing to loan out Lucas Torreira in a bid to create room in the squad for Thomas Partey.

The Ghana international is the top transfer target at the Emirates this summer.

But the Gunners have ran into problems negotiating with Atletico Madrid, who have proved tricky customers.

They will not even answer the call unless Partey's release clause is met – which stands at around £45m.

However, after forking £27m out for Gabriel Magalhaes, Arsenal are struggling to cough up the money.

Mikel Arteta has been keen to move on players that do not fit his style and Torreira is one of those, with a return to Italy mooted.

The Uruguay international had spent his entire professional career in Serie A prior to his move to Arsenal in 2018.

And the Guardian report that the 24-year-old could be allowed to leave north London on loan.

Fiorentina and Torino are both interested in the midfielder, who has failed to make much of an impression under Arteta.

Since recovering from a knee injury last season, Torreira has not featured once and he did not even make the matchday squad against Fulham on Saturday.

Arsenal have also lowered their asking price for the ex-Sampdoria star to £18m – a sizeable loss on the £26.5m they spent on him just two seasons ago.

But any funds made would go straight in the pot to land Partey, who is regarded as one of the best in his position.

Meanwhile, Fiorentina manager Marco Giampaolo's brother, Federico, has admitted that the club were facing a huge battle to convince him to join their club.

“Taking Torreira will be very difficult because it is an operation that involves a great outlay from the club,” he told Tuttosport.

“And it is a negotiation unrelated to the simple will of the player, so many factors come into play.
