Adnan Januzaj blasts Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal for treatment at Man Utd

Former Manchester United winger Adnan Januzaj has hit out at both Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho for not giving him the opportunity to impress at Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old Belgian came through the academy at United and looked like a hugely promising young prospect when he broke into the first-team under David Moyes in the 2013-14 season.

When Moyes left he struggled for game-time, however, and after loan spells at Dortmund and Sunderland he eventually left permanently to join Real Sociedad in 2017.

In 2019 Nick Butt described Januzaj as the biggest disappointment of all the players to have come through United's academy, saying he should have gone on to become a "world superstar".

But responding to that comment Januzaj, who faces United with La Real in the Europa League this week, blamed his ex-managers for not getting the best out of him.

Speaking to ESPN he said: "What he (Butt) said, it's true. But the only problem is that I didn't have the right coach to get me on my level and to push me.

"When Van Gaal came I was playing one game out of six, so it was difficult, and I was like, 'What am I doing here?'

"At United I didn't have that many chances, especially when Van Gaal and Mourinho came. When they came there it was more difficult for me because I was a young player.

"I was 18 or 19 and I just had to accept things. Before that I had people who believed in me like Ferguson. If he had stayed there longer I think I would have played longer for Manchester United."

Januzaj also rubbished suggestions that he should have worked harder to win back his place, adding:  "The only thing that the coach can use against you is if you're not training well, but I know myself, I was training well.

"It's never been an excuse for me, I've always trained hard since I started football."

It remains to be seen if Januzaj comes back to haunt United when La Real face Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side in the first leg of their Europa League last-32 tie in Turin on Thursday.
