England rugby's summer matches are thrown into chaos due to Covid-19

EXCLUSIVE: England Rugby’s summer matches are thrown into chaos due to Covid-19 disruption… with fixtures against the USA and Canada under threat and Georgia lined up for a visit

  • Several one-off Tests were planned on a short North American tour in July 2021
  • The matches would take place while several stars are away on the Lions tour
  • Arrangements are being hampered by serious logistical problems due to Covid

England’s summer fixture planning is on a knife-edge amid continuing COVID-19 disruption, with Georgia now being lined up for a potential visit to Twickenham.

Following the national team’s fifth-place finish in the Six Nations, head coach Eddie Jones will be hoping to oversee a swift revival, but the immediate outlook is uncertain.

The original plan was for England to play one-off Tests against Canada and the USA on a short North American tour in July, while several leading players are away with the Lions in South Africa.

England’s rugby team have several fixture arrangements thrown into chaos due to Covid-19

The side were due to play games while some stars were away on the Lions tour in South Africa

It emerged last month those end-of-season internationals were set to be switched so that England host the matches. Now, Sportsmail understands that arrangements are being undermined by chronic logistical problems.

The USA are supposed to be facing the Springboks – as part of the world champions’ preparations for their Test series against the Lions – before flying to the UK for games against England and Georgia.

However, the government are insisting that the Eagles must quarantine for 10 days as they would be arriving from a ‘red zone’ country, but that is not feasible in the tight time-frame.

But the proposed match against the USA is seemingly under threat due to logistical problems

So the England v USA match remains in doubt, with one source describing the process behind the scenes as a ‘total mess’.

It is unclear whether the England-Canada match is at a more advanced planning stage, while Jones’s men may also take on Georgia and the reinstated Saxons – the national ‘A’ team – are due to face Scotland.

As the Scots were supposed to be touring Georgia and Romania, there is a possibility that moves are afoot to create a round-robin event.
