‘I’m so passionate about what we are about’: Welch extends Storm stay until 2025

Christian Welch has again shunned offers from other clubs to extend his contract with the Melbourne Storm.

The 27-year-old premiership forward and Queensland representative will stay with the Storm until at least the end of the 2025 season, which would see Welch to his 13th season in Melbourne after moving to Victoria as an 18-year-old in 2013.

Welch’s tackling and consistency is highly prized at the Storm, as is his affable, thoughtful public demeanour.

In 2019 it appeared Welch would have to leave the club due to bigger offers from other teams but a knee injury and some perspective saw him stay on and play in the 2020 premiership win.

Several clubs were reportedly keen to sign Welch for the 2023 season but he chose to stay with the Storm, where he is seen as a potential captain once Jesse Bromwich finishes his time in the role.

“I’m so passionate about what we are about at Storm, and all the people involved, from the players and staff, to our amazing fans and corporate partners,” Welch said.

“Special thanks to my family in Brisbane. They understand how special a club it is, and have continued to support me staying down here.

“I can’t wait to get out there on AAMI Park in front of our fans, who have had it so tough for the last few years.”

Storm football director Frank Ponissi said Welch had a big role to play in the club’s future.

“We’re very happy that Christian his committed to this new contract with us that will take his time with Storm well past the 10-year mark,” Ponissi said.

“He was off-contract at the end of 2022 and was a priority re-signing for us.

“Although his career has had some setbacks, he has persevered and continued to grow and mature as a player on the field and as a leader of our club both on and off the field.

“There’s no doubt he will play a very important role in Storm’s future.”
