Red Bull chief advisor Helmut Marko has claimed that Ferrari turned their engines up for their home race at Monza last weekend, tipping the team to ‘suffer’ in the coming races off the back of that decision.
The Scuderia have made positive strides since the summer break with Charles Leclerc outpacing Lewis Hamilton in the battle for the final podium place in Belgium and Carlos Sainz taking his first pole position of the season in front of the Tifosi at Monza.
Both Ferrari drivers demonstrated pace at their home Grand Prix with Sainz defending valiantly from the threat of the ominously fast Max Verstappen before eventually conceding the lead ahead of the first round of stops.
While the Scuderia didn’t claim victory in front of their home crowd, they did still give the Tifosi plenty to celebrate and savour with Sainz and Leclerc going wheel-to-wheel for the final spot on the podium throughout the closing stages of the race.

Unfortunately for Ferrari, Red Bull chief Marko believes they will pay for this performance in the coming rounds. He told ServusTV: “We knew that Ferrari would put everything possible into Monza. They went to the maximum and squeezed out the last horsepower.
“But we also knew that the engine would suffer later for that. Unlike them, we have a universal car. So we knew it would be tight and didn’t lose our nerve.
“But we were still surprised that we didn’t keep up with Ferrari at first. Max had to drive differently and change his strategy and just be patient. The Max of four or five years ago would not have had that patience.”

Marko’s words offer credence to the theory of Fernando Alonso, who suggested after the race that Ferrari will always put maximum effort into the Italian Grand Prix in order not to disappoint the passionate legions of supporters that travel to Monza each year.
He explained: “It is the Ferrari circuit. For years they have put in a new engine or done special things like that for that race, but the world championship is 22 races.”
Despite believing that the Italian manufacturer was operating at maximum effort at Monza, Marko told Autosport: “I have to say Ferrari and especially Leclerc is a specialist around there.
“If they are faster in qualifying, then it could become a problem for us because overtaking in Singapore is very difficult. But I’m still optimistic that the package we are bringing to Singapore is good enough to win.”
