Lewis Hamilton has been handed a significant boost in his hopes of winning a seventh Formula One drivers’ championship after Valtteri Bottas was forced to retire from the Eifel Grand Prix.
The Finn was suffering from engine problems and dropped down to fifth, having started the race in pole position.
Bottas lost his lead on the first lap to Hamilton but regained first place before a lock-up allowed the Brit to overtake again on lap 13.
Just six laps later, Bottas suffered his first DNF of the season due to an apparent MGUH issue.
It means Hamilton – provided he finishes the race at the Nurburgring – can only build on his 44-point lead this afternoon.
