Lando Norris has apologised and admitted he was ‘stupid and careless’ for playing down Lewis Hamilton’s record-breaking win at the Portuguese Grand Prix on Sunday.

Hamilton claimed his 92nd victory in Formula One with a 25-second margin as he broke Michael Schumacher’s record for most race wins but Norris appeared to belittle the achievement.

The McLaren driver suggested Hamilton had it easier than his opponents because of the dominance of his car.

Speaking after the race, Norris said: ‘I’m just happy for him, nothing more.

‘It doesn’t mean anything to me, really. He’s in a car which should win every race, basically.

‘He has to beat one or two other drivers, that’s it. Fair play to him, he’s still doing the job he has to do.’

But Norris has now issued an apology for his comments, admitting he should have shown more respect.

Norris had said Hamilton has it easier because of his dominant car but has since apologised

‘I owe an apology,’ Norris said on Twitter. ‘I’ve been stupid and careless with some things I’ve said lately in media and interviews, and haven’t shown the respect I should have to certain people. I’m not that kind of person, so know I should apologise to them but also everyone reading/listening. Sorry.’

Norris finished 13th after a collision with Lance Stroll. The Racing Point driver cut across him and made contract with his orange machine, spinning off the track and causing damage to both cars.

Stroll was unable to finish the race and has since been awarded a five-second time penalty and two penalty points by the FIA.

Norris was forced into a pit-stop to fix his front-wing and was heard reacting angrily on his team radio.

He fumed: ‘What the ****, what is this ****** doing. I’ve got damage guys.’

After the race Norris added that Stroll ‘doesn’t seem to learn from anything he does’ but it’s unclear whether his tweet was also in relation to his comments about the Canadian.
