Lewis Hamilton will race into his 40s with Mercedes it has finally been confirmed – having just gone on an “extreme diet” to shed some holiday weight.
The Silver Arrows confirmed ahead of this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix that the 38-year-old will continue to drive with them for 2024 and 2025. It is anticipated that the new deal will earn Hamilton in the region of £50million-a-year.
The announcement ends speculation surrounding the seven-time world champion’s future on the grid with his current deal up for renewal at the end of the year. Mercedes will stick with their all-British line-up until at least the end of 2025 with George Russell, 25, continuing to partner Hamilton.
Hamilton won’t be the first F1 star to race on into his fifth decade. But of those who have, he’ll have had the longest uninterrupted career, having started out in F1 in 2007 at the age of 22.

Despite Mercedes’ struggles over the past couple of years, Hamilton seems to have lost none of the searing pace. The Brit remains in peak physical condition, although that wasn’t the case following the recent summer shutdown, which saw him switch off from F1 by jetting around the world.
However, the free living caught up with him ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix, the first race after the break, forcing him to go on a crash diet to lose weight, so crucial to lap time in F1.

"I ate so much food,” he admitted in Zandvoort. “My weight has to be between 73 and 74 kilos, and I was almost 77 kilos [just over 12st] on Saturday. So I had to go on an extreme diet these past days."
On his summer jet-setting, Hamilton added: "I did the first week in LA with my niece and nephew. It was really sunny, it was beautiful.
“I was mostly working while I was out there. And then I did some hiking in the mountains. And then I had a real unplugged rest in the sun so I got a really good tan.
"And otherwise [I was] just competing with my niece and nephew every day, running and jumping in the ocean. My niece, she just wants to do cannonballs all the time – just cannonball, cannonball, cannonball."
