Year 2 of the Mike McCarthy experiment in Dallas is going much better than Year 2 of the Joe Judge experiment in New York.
Both teams finished 6-10 last season in their coaches’ first season with their respective franchises, but one team — Dallas — is off to one of the hottest starts in football, while the other — the Giants — has struggled through the first month of the season.
The Cowboys are 3-1 and sqaurely atop the NFC East behind strong performances from running back Ezekiel Elliott, who’s third in the NFL in both rushing yards and touchdowns, and quarterback Dak Prescott.
Prescott, who went down in Week 5 last year with a compound fracture in his ankle, is currently third in passing touchdowns and fourth in the league in passer rating.
The Giants, meanwhile are 1-3, picking up their first win of the season in overtime against New Orleans thanks to a touchdown by Pro-Bowl running back Saquon Barkley, who took several weeks to return to form following a torn ACL early last season.
The win was a much needed one for a Giants team that has lost 49 games since 2017, with the Jets for the most in that time period. The Giants also haven’t finished above .500 since 2016, the last time they made the playoffs.
Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, who’s got 32 career fumbles in 31 career games, has played the most error-free football of his career thus far, and if he can keep up a string of performances without turnovers and can rely on Barkley to shoulder some of the load, the Giants may progress more under Judge in Year 2.
This is a matchup that could have big implications come playoff time and could go a long way toward the job security for both coaches.
