The Jacksonville Jaguars have started to realize that Blake Bortles isn’t very good. But the Jaguars quarterback himself doesn’t necessarily think he deserves the current degree of scrutiny.
In the Jaguars’ past three games (all losses), Bortles has thrown two touchdowns and five interceptions. He also lost two fumbles. Still, as the Jaguars continue to waste their defense by playing Bortles, the Jaguars quarterback says that he’s the “scapegoat” for the losses and ignored during the wins. He says that he’s come to accept it.
He said via NFL.com:
“I’m totally at peace with that. I totally understand that I’m like the scapegoat for this team. When we play good, ‘The defense played well, the running back did good, the receivers made great plays.’ And when we play bad, ‘Blake Bortles is the worst quarterback on the face of the planet.’
“And I get it. Obviously, that’s not what I would have chosen for myself. And I’m sure it’ll never stop. But I couldn’t care less. I just want to win football games with this team.”
While it’s true that the quarterback does get a disproportionate brunt of negativity when things are going poorly, Bortles really hasn’t been good. And it’s been that way for much of his NFL career.
