Fantasy Injury Updates: Is Matt Breida playing Thursday night?

Matt Breida’s fantasy owners have to be frustrated by his performance in the past couple weeks. Since suffering an ankle injury against the Cardinals in Week 5, his performance and ability to stay on the field has been erratic, at best. With the 49ers on a short week, Breida is officially “questionable” for Thursday Night Football against the Raiders. His owners are now wondering three major things. First, is Breida playing Thursday night Second, what exactly will his role be, especially with Raheem Mostert also questionable? Third, should you start or sit Breida in fantasy leagues in Week 9 if he’s active? Fantasy football owners will once again be looking for updates until the official TNF active/inactive report is released.

Throughout the day, we’ll provide you with the latest news on Breida’s status and whether he will play. Check back in the lead-up to kickoff to get an official answer.

Is Matt Breida playing Thursday night?

Breida is officially listed as “questionable”, and it really seems that his status is up in the air. Breida has shown a lot of toughness in the past few weeks playing through the ankle sprain he suffered, and he has yet to miss a game. However, he has left the past two games after aggravating the injury, so on a short week, it’s unclear exactly how healthy his ankle is at the moment.

Given that Breida has played through the injury in the past few weeks, it seems probable that he will try to play through it again. But on a short week, it’s fair to wonder just how effective he might be after he limped off late in his Week 8 matchup with the Cardinals. The injury has definitely been lingering, and if Breida isn’t full speed in pregame warmups, he may end up sitting out as a result. Those will need to be watched closely, as they could be the true litmus test for his availability tonight.

In the event that Breida can’t suit up, Alfred Morris and Raheem Mostert would be the next men up in the backfield. It’s hard to know exactly what Shanahan is planning on doing at the position, as prior to last week, it seemed that Mostert was trending toward being the top backup. However, he only saw two carries last week compared to Morris’s six. That, coupled with the fact that Mostert is dealing with an ankle injury as well, could make Morris the top backup in this contest. If either is available on the waiver wire, snapping them up would be a sensible move.

Another name to keep an eye on is Kyle Juszczyk. The team’s fullback has seen a role in the passing game at times this season, so he could end up being a sneaky DFS play in the event that Breida is sidelined and Mostert can’t play much either. That said, Juszczyk is not an option in year-long leagues unless you’re in an extremely deep format (14-16 teams).

If Breida does play, the 49ers backfield split will probably end up being a frustrating one. Breida will take most of the carries, but if his ankle acts up again, he may leave the field. It’s extremely hard to trust him, but in a loaded bye week, there simply aren’t many other options. Breida will still be an RB2 this week, as reflected in our Week 9 RB rankings, so if he’s on the field and doesn’t have a snap count, you have to play him.

As the day goes on, we’ll continue to provide updates on Breida’s status. For now, it’s very up in the air, so check back often as more information comes out regarding his status.
