Tennis prodigy Emma Raducanu left red-faced after unwittingly swearing on camera

Emma Raducanu's preparations for the Italian Open took a taboo twist after the tennis prospect was caught swearing in front of television cameras.

Rather than being any act out of character, however, Raducanu remains innocent following her attempt to speak Italian. The 19-year-old is in Rome this week to make her first appearance at the Italian Open.

There, she'll face Canadian Bianca Andreescu on Tuesday as she continues her first campaign on clay. Raducanu has been hard at work as she prepares to make her bow at the French Open later this month, the only Grand Slam in which she's yet to compete.

Upon being asked if she knows any Italian, the youngster replied: "Err… I did… like, que cazzo?" The term translates loosely to 'What the f***' in English, and Raducanu looked sheepish after her SuperTennis TV host gasped in response.

She then raised a hand to her mouth as she asked: "Is that a bad word?" Her interviewer laughed as she replied: "A little bit." Raducanu insisted it was a friend who had taught her the word before enquiring as to what it meant.

"I'll tell you later. . .at the end of the interview," came the response. Realising her blunder, Raducanu fell into hysterics as she asked: "Really? Have I just sworn on camera??"

The British No 1 recently provided an update on her condition and said she's "managing" the back issue that's affected her since Madrid. Still at the very beginning of her professional career, the teenager is acclimating to the demands of the senior circuit.

"I think it's just coming from a lot of intensity and overload," she said ahead of her debut in Rome. "My back, I'm managing it. Like it's fine. But it's just trying to adapt again to the long matches, to the intensity.

"I think that all of the small sorts of niggles I'm getting, they're all related and connected to each other when something is overcompensating, perhaps. Yeah, we'll see."
