Pittsburgh Steelers unbeaten season could be about to be derailed by Covid-19

Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin remains confident his side can stay unbeaten despite seeing four players added to the Covid list.

Star quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and three others were added after they were deemed high-risk close contacts with tight end Vance McDonald.

McDonald returned a positive test for the virus on Monday with the Steelers having gone 8-0 with a win over Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

They are the only unbeaten team in the NFL and take on Cincinnati Bengals in Week 10.

Tomlin is hopeful to have his players back for that clash, though is confident in his roster.

"Those guys will be working remotely throughout the week and testing daily," Tomlin said.

"As long as their tests come back negative, we believe that all four guys have an opportunity to be made available to us on Saturday.

"I'm not overly concerned about it [players playing without practising]. This guy [Roethlisberger] has been doing it for 17 years.

“He has snap experience that he can call upon. We're still going to work extremely hard virtually to prepare. Lot of his work is above the neck anyway.

“In terms of preparation, I have very little concern about it, to be quite honest with you.

"We'll play it by ear as we proceed through the week. I'm not opposed to playing anybody that increases our chances of winning based on what we're looking at."

Roethlisberger has thrown for 18 touchdowns this season, being picked off just four times.

Back-up QB Mason Rudolph has found opportunities tough to come by given Big Ben’s form, and Steelers fans will be hoping Roethlisberger can play on Sunday.

It’s been 12 years since the Super Bowl was won by Pittsburgh though they are the joint-most successful team in the era.

The strong start puts them among the favourites to add to their six rings though, like with many things in 2020, Covid-19 could derail any ambitions.
