New York Jets in “really strong position” at NFL Draft after offseason changes

The New York Jets are in a “really strong position” heading into this year’s NFL Draft despite their awful 2020 season.

That’s the view of two-time Super Bowl winning star Osi Umenyiora, who gained his success in the Big Apple with the New York Giants.

The Jets struggled badly in 2020, winning just two regular season games and then fired head coach Adam Gase.

Robert Saleh has come in at the MetLife Stadium though Sam Darnold, who was drafted at No. 3 overall pick in 2018 has been traded to the Carolina Panthers.

It means the Jets are in desperate need of a quarterback again having the second overall pick at this year’s Draft, which gets underway on Thursday.

And Umenyiora believes the offseason changes the Jets have made has them looking upwards.

“You bring in a coach like Robert, who by all accounts is a fantastic person and people love to play for him, and that brings a different energy,” Umenyiora told Daily Star Sport.

“I’m not sure the last coach they had was that type of guy so Saleh comes in and has that energy.

“On top of that, even though Sam Darnold did get drafted high I don’t think people really thought of him as a generational quarterback.

“I think whoever they get at No. 2, it’s looking like Zach Wilson, I watched his pro day and people say he is the real deal.

“I think the Jets are actually in a really strong position now. They have the right coach, the right coaching staff and they can be set for a few years.”

The San Francisco 49ers traded up to third with Umenyiora intrigued as to see what they do.

“Every team that is picking in the top five needs to have a big draft,” the former defensive end added.

“You see the top three teams are looking at the quarterback position. Obviously the Jaguars, Jets and 49ers have moved up.

“You wouldn’t think the 49ers need to have revolution because they’re only a couple of years removed from the Super Bowl though they need to make some moves.
