Basketball interview interrupted as two team-mates descend into all-out brawl

There was unexpected scenes at the women's basketball World Cup when two Mali players started fighting each other after their fourth defeat in the competition.

Serbian basketball star Sasa Cado was carrying out a post-match interview after their 81-68 victory over a lowly Mali side when the television cameras moved away from her and onto two Mali players brawling.

The fight between Salimatou Kourouma and Kamite Elisabeth Dabou caused a worried Cado to step back. While the heated scuffle escalated, Mali players jumped in to separate the players

In a statement, the basketball world organisation body Fiba said: "“FIBA acknowledged today that there was an altercation between Mali players in the mixed zone following the Group B game Serbia-Mali at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022.

"Following the incident, Fiba has opened an investigation. Once the investigation is concluded, Fiba will decide on any applicable disciplinary measures."

The pair could face sanctions for the brawl with Kourouma contracted with professional basketball team Stade Malien, based in Mali‘s capital city Bamako. Meanwhile, Dabou plays her trade for Centre Dorinthie Basket.

Mali were given a place in the tournament after African champions Nigeria were withdrawn from the tournament by their government due to administration difficulties freeing up a place in the tournament.

Frustrations had been bubbling in the Mali camp after three opening defeats in the tournament against Japan, hosts Australia and France before the Serbia match.

Mali are the lowest ranked team in the tournament, ranked 37 in the world, and face Canada in their final group game before heading home. Serbia have had a mixed tournament with defeats against Canada and Australia but beating Japan and Mali.
