Adam Johnson dies after ice hockey star, 29, takes skate to the neck

Ice hockey player Adam Johnson has died aged 29 after a ‘freak accident’, his club Nottingham Panthers have confirmed. Johnson suffered a cut to the neck during the Panthers’ Challenge Cup match against Sheffield Steelers and has died from his injuries.

The fixture was stopped during the 35th minute as paramedics rushed to Johnson’s attention after an incident involving a skate which made contact with his neck. He was later taken to Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital.

Nottingham Panthers tweeted shortly after the incident that the 8,000 fans in the venue had been “asked to leave the building due to a major medical emergency”. His club have said they are “truly devastated” by Johnson’s death.

“The Nottingham Panthers are truly devastated to announce that Adam Johnson has tragically passed away following a freak accident at the game in Sheffield last night,” a statement read.

“The Panthers would like to send our thoughts and condolences to Adam’s family, his partner, and all his friends at this extremely difficult time.

“Everyone at the club including players, staff, management and ownership are heartbroken at the news of Adam’s passing.

“Our thoughts are also with the fans and staff of both clubs, especially those who attended or were following the game, who will be devastated following today’s news.”

The Panthers continued to pay tribute to Johnson, who they hailed as a “great team-mate” and “an incredible person”. Johnson leaves behind a partner.

“The Panthers would like to thank everyone who rushed to support Adam last night in the most testing of circumstances,” the statement continued. “Adam, our number 47, was not only an outstanding ice hockey player, but also a great team-mate and an incredible person with his whole life ahead of him.

“The club will dearly miss him and will never ever forget him. We ask that the privacy of Adam’s family and friends, and everyone at the club is respected at this difficult time as we all seek to come to terms with our grief. Rest in peace Adam.”

The Panthers were playing the Sheffield Steelers at the Utilita Arena. All further ice hockey matches this weekend have been postponed by the Elite Ice Hockey League as the sport mourns the loss of Johnson.
