These are the five key contenders for the 2021 Randox Grand National

The Randox Grand National takes centre stage on the third and final day of the Aintree Festival – and what a race we have in store.

The world's greatest steeplechase is woven into the fabric of the sporting year – an occasion when once-a-year punters get to pit their wits against the bookies, while more dedicated racing fans will look at the race in more detail.

Last year's National was cancelled as a result of the coronavirus pandemic – with racing fans denied the chance to see Tiger Roll make history and claim a National hat-trick for the first time since the 1970s.

And fans will be denied that chance again this year, as the back-to-back winner in 2018 and 2019 has been removed from the race due to "unfair weight" allocation.

However, there are still some incredibly talented and well-handicapped horses in the race, one of those being the well-backed favourite Cloth Cap.

Here we take a look at some of the main contenders...

Who are the key contenders?

Trainer Jonjo O'Neill has always had one eye on the Grand National for Cloth Cap.

The nine-year-old, owned by three-time Grand National winner Trevor Hemmings, has returned this season as an improved horse when winning the Ladbrokes Trophy Chase at Newbury back in November.

He's unproven over this longer National trip and is yet to run over the spruce fences, but does look an obvious contender on what we've seen so far this season.

Any Second Now was a Cheltenham Festival winner in the Kim Muir over three miles and two furlongs back in 2019.

This season, however, the nine-year-old hit a flat spot with two ninth place finishes over hurdles, as well as being pulled up in the Goffs Thyestes at Gowran Park.

Despite that, an impressive win at Navan last time out has certainly boosted his chances.

Stamina over four miles is going to be the big question asked of Minella Times.

Usually seen running over two miles and six furlongs, the Henry de Bromhead-trained eight-year-old has only started at three miles twice, though he notched up a very decent second place at Leopardstown in December – so there is hope.

His odds tumbled when it looked like Rachael Blackmore would pair with him for the big race.

Another class runner for Rich Ricci, Burrows Saint gave trainer Willie Mullins his first Irish Grand National win in 2019.

The eight-year-old took a long break before returning this season and just qualified for the 2021 Grand National when starting in the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse on Feb 27, finishing in second place.

The Irish Grand National is also on the cards.

Kimberlite Candy is a very interesting 2021 Grand National prospect.

The JP McManus-owned nine-year-old pulled up in the 2019 Irish Grand National, but finished second in the Becher Chase in both 2019 and 2020 – so can definitely jump those tricky Aintree fences.

He also staked a big claim for the world's greatest steeplechase on April 4 when winning the Classic Chase at Warwick – a race that One For Arthur took before his National triumph in 2017.

Has has won over three miles and five furlongs, so stamina and distance shouldn't pose any issues.
