Star Of The Seas capable of turning the tables on Verry Elleegant in George Main Stakes

Jockey Sam Clipperton is hoping for a change of fortune on Saturday when he’s legged aboard the Chris Waller-trained Star Of The Seas in the $500,000 Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) at Randwick.

Clipperton is surely due for a change of luck in a feature race?

In recent weeks the popular jockey has finished close seconds in the Group 1 Winx Stakes and the Group 2 contests – the Chelmsford Stakes and Tramway Stakes.

The beaten margins – a half head in the Winx Stakes, a long head in the Chelmsford Stakes and a short neck in the Tramway Stakes.

In those three races – Clipperton’s mounts have been beaten 0.6 lengths and the difference between the combined winning prizemoney to the second placegetters was $359,050.

“I’m not having much luck but my head space is really good,” Clipperton said.

“A couple of times recently I’ve probably been entitled to spit the dummy and a year ago I probably would have but I haven’t.

“Mentally I feel really strong and I am really enjoying my riding again. I know I’ve been riding really well and my head’s really in the game.

“I’m going everywhere and not necessarily for many rides. I’ve been going to Goulburn for two, I went to Wyong for one last Sunday.

“I wouldn’t have done that a year ago because I thought I was too good, I thought I was entitled to more, but that break I had at the end of last year reminded me how lucky I am to be doing what I do.

“I love being a jockey again and it also made realise I can never rest on my laurels, no one is entitled to anything in this sport.

“It rewards hard work so I’m working hard, and I know eventually some luck will come my way.”

Clipperton’s close seconds in the feature races in recent weeks have all come aboard Waller-trained gallopers – Star Of The Seas in the Winx Stakes, Yulong Prince in the Chelmsford Stakes and Kolding in the Tramway.

“Opportunities are a bit thin but that’s Sydney and you have to make the most of every chance you get,” Clipperton said. “I’m not the only jockey in that boat.

“Have a look at Timmy Clark, he won three Group Ones in the autumn and he’s not getting full books. That’s just the way it is in Sydney.

“I’m lucky that Chris has been a really big supporter since I came back from my sabbatical and it would give me a lot of satisfaction to be able to say thank you for that support with another feature race win.”

Star Of The Seas is rated a $9 chance for Saturday’s upcoming assignment behind his Winx Stakes conqueror Verry Elleegant the $2.40 favourite.

“It’s a proper high-quality Group One race on Saturday but he showed in the Winx Stakes he’s worthy of being in a contest like this,” Clipperton said. “I wouldn’t want to swap him.

“He’s one of those horses that jockeys love – he’s an absolute gentleman that gives you everything he’s got and I seem to have clicked with him.

“He seems to have gone to another level again this preparation which he’s done every time he’s been in work for the past couple of years.

“The thing that I love about him the most as a racehorse is his versatility.

“You go back to his run in the Epsom last year he rode the speed but in the Doncaster and the Winx Stakes, he came from a long way off them.

“He handles whatever the conditions are thrown at him and he’s effective over plenty of distances.

“It’s hard to punch holes in him.”
