Horse racing fans were left hailing wonder jockey Billy Loughnane after they watched him ride to an improbably victory at Newcastle on Friday afternoon.
Racing in the 4.45, Loughnane, riding Spangled Mac, looked to have no hope of winning two furlongs out, with the young jockey and his horse at the back of the pack. However, the 17-year-old somehow managed to fly through the field, charging past his competitors to claim an improbably win.
The teenager has enjoyed an incredible season, having recently been named as the 2023 Champion Apprentice Jockey on Champions Day at Ascot last month. And fans on social media were also left stunned by Loughnane and Spangled Mac's 'filthy ride'.

One fan commented on X, formerly Twitter: "Billy Loughnane that is simply disgusting..! How has he got Spangled Mac up there!" A second said: "No Words…Sensational. Billy Loughnane take a bow."
A third wrote: "Oh that is filthy." A fourth added: "Never panicked, fantastic talent in the saddle."

"It’s been crazy and to have ridden 100 winners in less than a year is pretty unreal," said Loughnane told the Racing Post when asked about his crazy season. "There’s been a few highlights, one of which was having my first winner for Godolphin on Sapphire Seas. I just got up to win by a nose which was massive for me."
