MURRAY Bridge trainer Mick Huxtable is hoping for a touch of luck and an incident-free lead up for horse and rider when Shebringzit lines up in Saturday’s Group 1 SA Derby at Morphettville.
Shebringzit, with two wins, two seconds and a third from 14 starts, gained an automatic entry into the field with its recent third in the Chairman Stakes behind local powerhouse Royal Mile. The filly will carry 54.5kg on Saturday.
But while there are no problems with the horse Huxtable wasn’t sure what the situation was with leading jockey Jess Eaton who often rides for Huxtable. Eaton was injured in a fall on Pelonomena in the Port Adelaide Cup at Morphettville last Saturday which ruled her out of the day’s racing.
Eaton was due to ride Huxtable’s star Ecumenical in the Group 1 Australasian Oaks but was taken to hospital for scans on her legs. She was replaced by Harry Coffey on her Oaks ride.
Huxtable said it was rotten luck for Eaton who would have lined up in her first Group 1 race.
“She texted me back later that night to say she was ok and had a gash in her leg,’’ Huxtable said.
“Not sure about anything more but hopefully she will be back riding soon.
“There is a 1600m race on the last day of the carnival which Ecumenical might have a go at. And Harry (Coffey) rode a good race on her in the Oaks, she was only beaten 1.3 lengths which was a good run. But again the wide barrier did not help.
“Shebringzit comes in with 54.5kg so it is a good weight. She qualified for the race so at least we know we are there.’’
Meanwhile, Oaks day proved bitter sweet for top Victorian rider Luke Nolen.
On top of the world after a stunning win aboard Media Award in the Oaks, Nolen left the day with a four-meeting ban after being found guilty by stewards for careless riding on board Totally Discreet in the opening event, the Without Fear Stakes. At this stage the suspension ends on May 12.
Other feature races at Morphettville this Saturday are the Group 3 Sires Produce Stakes, the Listed Adelaide Guineas and the provincial, autumn and sprint series finals for qualified horses which ran in lead-up heats.
