Fierce Impact won the Makybe Diva Stakes but Russian Camelot starred

Fierce Impact has won his third Group 1 in Melbourne taking out the Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington but it was the runner-up Russian Camelot that everyone was talking about.

While Mark Zahra gave Fierce Impact a perfect ride, trailing the leaders with cover throughout, Damien Oliver was trapped four-wide and never looked like getting any respite.

However Oliver was happy to keep the star galloper balanced and he cruised to the front soon after straightening but was the sitting shot for Fierce Impact inside the 200m.

Fierce Impact dashed to the lead but Russian Camelot dug deep and was taking ground off the winner again as they closed on the post but the Matthew Smith-trained galloper had enough in reserve.

Last spring Fierce Impact won the Toorak Handicap at Caulfield and followed up making it a Group 1 double in the Cantala at Flemington during the VRC carnival.
