Melbourne Cup Preview

Last year's Derby winner Warning.

Derby Day is the biggest day on the racing calendar.

It’s the first day of Flemington’s four-day racing extravaganza and the star-studded program includes four Group 1s as well as two Group 2s and three Group 3s.

A day that usually attracts more than 85,000 racegoers, there will be no trackside crowd this year because of COVID-10 restrictions.

The $2 million VRC Derby for three-year-old stayers is the main event, where Young Werther and Cherry Tortoni are the favourites to win the gruelling 2500m test.

The other Group 1 highlights include the Coolmore Stud Stakes, Cantala Stakes and Empire Rose Stakes, plus the winner of the Group 3 Hotham Handicap earns the last spot in the Melbourne Cup.
