Rory McIlroy on Ryder Cup
The Ryder Cup hosted two dozen multi-millionaire golfers in Rome last week and their success in the game was duly represented by the timepieces on their wrists. Whilst the European and USA players don’t receive a penny for participating in the biennial team matchplay event, their riches from competing on tour and subsequent sponsorship deals led to a fashion show of some of the most desirable watches in the world on the fairways of the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club.
A number of players sported extremely expensive wristwatches for the three-day event – and TikToker Chad Alexander has been breaking down the eye-watering cost of each one of them on his social media channel.
According to Alexander, world No. 2 Rory McIlroy was wearing an Omega Deville Tourbillon in rose gold. The classic-looking watch is out of reach for mere mortals, with a retail price of around £118,000.
American wildcard pick Justin Thomas and Masters champion Jon Rahm were both wearing Rolex Sky-Dwellers with a blue dial. They retail at the more ‘affordable’ price of £19,850.
Collin Morikawa sported a Rolex Daytona in white gold that is worth over £40,000. The American lost his Sunday singles match to Viktor Hovland 4&3, but that wasn’t the only contest he lost on the day.
When it came to who was wearing the most expensive watch, Norwegian Hovland blew his opponent out of the water with a white ceramic Audemars Piguet Royal Oak perpetual calendar, which can cost as much as £230,000. For that price, you would a least expect it to have the world clock function.
Irishman Shane Lowry bounced around the course in a Patek Philippe Nautilus annual calendar that can be picked up for £105,000 online.
European veteran and British favourite Justin Rose wasn’t about to miss out on the action either. The oldest player in the competition was wearing a Rolex Day Date with a meteorite dial and baguette diamond hour markers.
The watch comes in two versions with TikToker Alexander unsure which one Rose was wearing. The white gold edition retails for £66,500 but the platinum choice is almost £95,000.
Rickie Fowler is always a class act on and off the golf course and that also extends to the timepiece on his wrist. The American showed off a Platinum Rolex Daytona that can be thrown on your own arm in exchange for £82,000.

European captain Luke Donald kept up his flawless appearance with a green dial Rolex Datejust that can almost be considered obtainable with a retail price of £12,000. Perhaps he’ll treat himself to a watch like Hovland’s after masterminding victory over the Americans…
Tommy Fleetwood was one of the few players to actually be wearing a dedicated golf watch. The Englishman wore a Tag Heuer Connected Golf which can be yours too for a fraction over £2,000. The total cost for all the watches worn by the Ryder Cup players amounts to well in excess of £1m.
None of these sporting superstars picked up a pay cheque for their exploits in Rome, with honour the only thing at stake in the Ryder Cup. But if any of them find themselves a bit short on cash this week, they could always sell their watches and tie themselves over a bit longer.
