PGA Tour, DP World Tour and LIV Golf agree shock merger
The European Ryder Cup team has officially been announced with a number of LIV Golf stars left missing out. Playing for Luke Donald’s team, alongside the automatic picks, include Justin Rose while LIV Golf defectors such as Sergio Garcia have been left to watch on from afar.
Europe’s Ryder Cup team, as selected by captain Luke Donald, includes a number of stars who have enjoyed impressive years on the greens. 12-man team includes Tommy Fleetwood who will be making his third appearance at the tournament and is off the back of a strong year on the PGA Tour.
Donald’s second pick is Austrian, Sepp Straka who is making his debut at the Ryder Cup. Straka comes into the team after winning the John Deere Classic earlier in the year.
Justin Rose is in to make his sixth appearance following his victory at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am earlier in the year. Shane Lowry comes in for the second time in his career with Nicolai Hojgaard making his Ryder Cup debut.
Donald’s final pick is Ludvig Aberg who comes in off the back of winning the European Masters yesterday. The pick means the likes of Adrian Meronk will miss out.
A number of golfers were already selected for the European team through automatic qualification after the Omega European Masters. Robert MacIntyre was the first to secure his spot on Luke Donald’s team after claiming the Italian Open at last year’s Italian Open at Marco Simone, and fending off Yannick Paul and Adrian Meronk who finished outside the top three in Switzerland.
Ryder Cup regular Rory McIlroy managed to qualify for the seventh year in a row. The world No.2 managed another successful year which included winning the Scottish Open and the CJ CUP in South Carolina.
Joining the pair to round off the team will be Matt Fitzpatrick, Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland and Tyrrell Hatton.

European players who joined the Saudi-backed LIV Golf tour are unable to participate having been forced to give up their DP Tour Cards. However, American Brooks Koepka has been allowed to join his team as the rules don’t apply to players in the US.
The American team includes a number of famous faces, such as Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Sam Burns, Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele, Max Homa, Scottie Scheffler, Wyndham Clark, Brian Harman and Patrick Cantlay.
The tournament starts on September 25 at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, Italy.
