Smith, Lees our focus this morning
In the men’s we’ll be following the feature group of Cam Smith, Min Woo Lee and Japan’s Rikuya Hoshino, who finished second behind Lee at the Aussie PGA championship last week.
Right behind them, beautifully placed, is the women’s feature group, with superstar Minjee Lee, South Africa’s defending champion Ashleigh Buhai and Lee’s compatriots, former major winner Hannah Green.
Unsure if Lee’s happy parents designed the groups but they’ll have it easy for rhe first two days. These morning groups at the Lakes switch to an afternoon round at the Oz tomorrow.
The tournament format
Quick recap for the uninitiated: the Australian Open is in its second year of being a mixed gender event.

The men and women play their own tournaments, but in alternating groups. Due to the size of the combined starting fields (128 men amd 98 women), the first two days are held across two courses: The Lakes and the Australian GC, which is very close by in Sydney’s east. Amazingly, just one road stops a corner of each connecting.
Good morning
OK, good morning everyone from the Australian Open and more specifically from the foggy 10th tee at the Lakes GC, where the marquee groupings of both the men’s and the women’s tournaments are starting today just after 7am.
Nine’s coverage on the telly doesn’t start until midday, so we are your best option for live updates and pithy observations.
