Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr hit out at fight rules in first press conference

Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr both hit out at the decision to reduce their exhibition bout to two minute rounds.

The pair, who will meet in Los Angeles on November 28, took part in their first press conference ahead of the clash.

The two legends are returning to the ring and will compete across eight two-minute rounds, instead of the standard three-minute rounds. And neither boxer is happy with the change.

Tyson was asked by Daily Star Sport reporter Ollie Salt if he was disappointed that the bout is two minute rounds, given his punching reputation.

Tyson responded: “Absolutely! I’m sure they have their reason for doing it but the women fight two minutes.

“I have to understand this is bigger than me, they have the charities, it’s not all about me so I guess the commissioner has more of an input than I do, so who am I to talk.

“I’m just happy that we are doing it.”

The question was then put to Jones Jr, who was also not happy with the change.

Jones said: “I’m not happy at all, that’s for women. I kept fighting until the last minute, why are we doing two minute rounds?

“I don’t understand. We are two of the best to ever do it, why do we have to do two minute rounds?

“If something happens, it’s going to happen anyway. Two minute, three minutes, five minutes. It doesn’t really matter.

“What difference does it make? Two minutes doesn’t do anything for him nor me, it cheats the fans out of it.

“It’s their excitement. It gives us a bit more time to get them a bit more fatigued and set up a better shot than we would in two minutes.

“It’s advantageous for everybody to keep it three minutes. But it’s supposed to be an ‘exhibition’, ‘charity event’, okay.”

It was announced at the press conference that Tyson and Jones Jr will do battle at the Staples Center in LA.

Tyson added: “I’m really happy with everything I’ve been doing, it’s down to confidence and self affirmation.

“It’s amazing, I’m just ready to do this. I can’t explain it in words. I’m going to go as long as this is working. My legend is going to be that I gave a lot more than I took.”
