Minnesota Lynx select Australian guard Tahlia Tupaea in 2017 WNBA Draft

AUSTRALIA’S Tahlia Tupaea has been selected by the Minnesota Lynx with the 36th overall pick in the 2017 WNBA Draft.

The 19-year-old has played in the WNBL since 2012, playing all five of her seasons with the Sydney Uni Flames. During the Flames’ 2017 championship campaign, Tupaea averaged 8.3 points and 3.8 rebounds in 15 games.

It’s not likely that Tupaea will be travelling to Minnesota to join the Lynx — she’s just re-signed with the Flames for two years — but there’s a good chance she’ll join the WNBA team within the next few years.

Tupaea is widely regarded as a future Australian Opal, having already represented her country’s under-17 and under-19 team, respectively.

The 5’9 guard was the only Australian drafted in the 2017 draft, and the first from the country since Carley Mijovic (30th overall pick, Washington Mystics) and Stephanie Talbot (33rd overall pick, Phoenix Mercury) were selected in 2014.
