England ring the changes for white-ball tour of West Indies next month after World Cup debacle with Dawid Malan among those left out as he considers international retirement
- England travel to the West Indies for three ODIs and five T20s next month
- 36-year-old Dawid Malan doesn’t feature despite scoring 404 World Cup runs
- Only six players from the shambolic World Cup feature in squad for Caribbean
England have wasted no time in moving on from their World Cup shambles by selecting their white-ball squads for their tour of the Caribbean next month, with no space for Dawid Malan in either the ODI or T20 squad.
Malan was England’s highest run scorer at the World Cup with 404 runs but at 36, he admitted earlier in the week that despite getting a one-year contract last month, Saturday’s game against Pakistan could be his last for England.
And this decision all but signals the end of his international career, despite managing director Rob Key insisting that Malan will still be considered for T20 selection.
‘His (Malan’s) form last year (in T20 cricket) is the reason why he’s not there. He’s got to take his franchise opportunities and improve and get back to the player he was two years ago to get back in for the World Cup,’ said Key.
‘If you told me at this point that is it 100 per cent that Dawid Malan will not play in the T20 World Cup, I would say ‘absolutely not.’ He’s got every opportunity to get there. He’s just got to show us that he can get back to the player he was.’

Jos Buttler will continue to lead both the ODI and T20 side but only six players from England’s World Cup squad will feature in the three-match ODI series against West Indies with Gus Atkinson, Harry Brook, Sam Curran and Liam Livingstone all included, as well as Brydon Carse who replaced Reece Topley in India.
Topley is part of the squad for the five T20s but England have not rushed back the left-arm seamer for the 50-over format after he went home from the World Cup with a broken finger.
Buttler stressed after England’s win against Pakistan on Saturday that there would not be a ‘huge clearout’ but head coach Matthew Mott admitted that changes were always to be expected, regardless of how England fared at the World Cup.
Uncapped seamers Josh Tongue and Josh Turner are included in both squads, while there is a call up for Ollie Pope for the one-dayers.
There is also no space for Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid in the one-day squad though both are expected to remain part of the 20-over setup until the T20 World Cup next year.
England’s World Cup players who are also set to tour India early next year for a five-match Test series are not included with none of Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes and Mark Wood in either of the squads, though Chris Woakes will feature in the T20 leg.
Ben Stokes will decide whether he returns to ODI retirement after undergoing knee surgery once he returns home.
‘I don’t think I’m ever really getting to the point where you’re just going to say that people are done completely. But out of that you’ve got Root, Bairstow, – Root who I think regardless of anything needs a break,’ said Key.
Josh Tongue, uncapped for England in white-ball cricket, is included in both squads
Ben Stokes will make a decision over whether to retire again from one-day cricket
‘He’s not stopped since probably New Zealand or what he did in Pakistan, the ILT20, New Zealand, The Hundred, Ashes and so on.
‘So him getting ready for that Test tour along with Jonny Bairstow and Mark Wood. Jonny, since that injury, he’s been non-stop as well and he needs to actually get himself into a position where he can go and take on an Indian test.’
England’s next game is the first ODI against West Indies in Antigua on 3 December.
They will not play another ODI after that until September 2024, when Australia come to England for a five-match series.
