Newcastle have been urged to sign Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale in the January transfer window. Gabriel Agbonlahor believes he would be an upgrade on Nick Pope and says the Magpies should also pursue Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips to ease their midfield concerns.

Ramsdale is in line to play his first Premier League match since September this weekend. He will replace David Raya, who is not allowed to play against his parent club Brentford on Saturday.

But Raya will likely come straight back in for the Champions League match at home to Lens next Wednesday. Mikel Arteta has seemingly put faith in his fellow Spaniard as his No 1.

Ramsdale feels aggrieved to have been dropped and has even had his dad come out publicly and fight his corner. He has been linked with a move away from the Emirates less than a year after he signed a new contract.

Agbonlahor says it is vital that Ramsdale leaves in January and reckons Newcastle would be the ideal destination. Pope has been a star for Eddie Howe since making the move from Burnley in the summer of 2022.

However, he has recently found himself out of the England squad. Agbonlahor says Ramsdale would provide Newcastle with the option of playing out from the back, something he feels Pope cannot do.

Asked about Ramsdale, the former Aston Villa captain told talkSPORT: “It’ll be a tough game [against Brentford] and [Ramsdale] knows that all eyes are going to be on him because he hasn’t played for so long and this is his chance to shine.

“There’s a lot of pressure on Ramsdale but he has to go in January. Arteta has made it clear.

“I’m saying [he should go to] Newcastle. It’s Newcastle or Chelsea for me, because Pope’s a top shot-stopper but he can’t play with his feet.
