Jenson Button has claimed that Lance Stroll needs to “have more respect” for his team at Aston Martin, batting off the defence from team principal Mike Krack after the Canadian driver lashed out at his personal trainer in Qatar.

Stroll had been eliminated in Q1 during qualifying for the fourth successive race at the Qatar Grand Prix, leaving him furious in the cockpit. The 24-year-old first threw his steering wheel from the cockpit before storming past his trainer in the garage.

His trainer, attempting to get Stroll to head for his mandatory post-session weigh-in, was shoved out of the way by the Canadian driver, who later attracted even more criticism after storming out of the subsequent press session.

“For me, the big one is the off-track antics which I have a little bit of an issue with,” Button told Sky Sports F1. “I think as a racing driver you get stressed in certain situations but you need to control that.

“You need to have more respect within the team and who you work with. And I think he lost that a little bit at the last race. Hopefully, he realises that and he’s put it right.”

David Croft then pressed Button on Krack’s defence of Stroll’s actions, likening them to a footballer kicking over a water bottle in frustration. The 2009 world champion wasn’t entertaining that comparison, stating: “Not when it’s a human being, no. So it’s not, and you know, Mike Krack also said that drivers need more respect.
