Rafael Nadal considering pulling out of tournament following US Open triumph

Rafael Nadal is looking to strip back his schedule following success at the US Open.

The world No 2 needed four hours and 50 minutes to beat Daniil Medvedev in a gruelling final on Sunday.

Such a difficult battle left Nadal struggling to get changed in the dressing room in the aftermath.

The 18-time Grand Slam winner is set to return to action alongside Roger Federer at the Laver Cup next weekend.

But Nadal is considering pulling out of the Shanghai Masters, which starts on October 5, to ensure he is fresh for the Paris Masters later that month.

“It’s hard for me to tell my plans right now,” Nadal told Spanish media during a conference call.

“I shot off after the final to the plane and I didn’t have time to talk to the team.

“They arrived later in Palma and I hope that we have a conversation soon.

“Anyway, to decide the calendar I have to wait to see how my body evolves. “The immediate thing is to play the Laver Cup (September 20-22), which is planned. The next thing I do not know.

“Priority objectives from here at the end of the year and also with a view to the next one. It will be one or the other depending on those objectives.

“The Masters in Asia is still yet to be decided. The Masters in Paris-Bercy is what I have fixed.”

Nadal will finish his season at London’s O2 Arena for the ATP Tour Finals.

The best eight players of the season – based on amount of ATP points accumulated – qualify for the prestigious event.

But Nadal skipped last year’s tournament due to a knee injury sustained at the US Open.
