However Madrid boss Zidane has now vowed that Varane will not be going anywhere in the summer transfer window.

‘The positive point of this season finale is that Varane will stay,’ he said following Madrid’s 1-0 defeat by relegation-threatened Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.

Varane has won 16 trophies with the La Liga giants since joining eight years ago, including four Champions Leagues and two La Liga titles and also played a key role for France as they won the World Cup in Russia last summer.

The surprise defeat at the weekend left Zidane’s side 18 points adrift of champions Barcelona in what has been a disappointing campaign.

When asked if he couldn’t wait for the league to end Zidane said: ‘I want the season to end as soon as possible but there are three games left and we have to respect the competition.

‘We cannot finish the season giving this image of ourselves.’
