According to Bild, Neuer has earmarked Euro 2020 as his swansong for the national team, as he prepares to pass on the baton to Barcelona’s Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

The pair were embroiled in a spat during the international round of fixtures, with the Barcelona number one venting his frustrations at his lack of game time with the Germany team owing to Neuer’s dominance in that position.

Neuer has featured in all five of Germany’s qualification games for the upcoming tournament so far, and has played 10 games compared to his compatriot’s 45 minutes in the last year.

Ter Stegen said: ‘It’s not easy to find an explanation for what I am experiencing. I am still trying everything, but this trip with Germany was a tough blow for me.’

The Bayern Munich keeper hit back at the remarks, saying the team should remain united.

‘We have great goalkeepers. We have Kevin Trapp, Bernd Leno. These are all great goalkeepers who also want to play and then sit on the bench,’ Neuer said.

‘We are a team. We have to stick together. The goalkeepers also have to stick together.’

27-year-old ter Stegen didn’t take too kindly to Neuer’s remarks, and said in a press conference prior to Barcelona’s game against Dortmund: “I don’t think it is up to Manuel to express an opinion on my feelings. Everyone has seen how I have conducted myself over the last few years,”
