Marc Marquez receives poor reception from Valentino Rossi’s fans

Marc Marquez claimed MotoGP victory at the San Marino Grand Prix in Misano, otherwise known as Valentino Rossi's backyard.

'The Doctor' is idolised around the world, but the loving he receives peaks at this round given its proximity to his hometown.

The adoring crowd weren't able to see their hero win as he finished in fourth and had to watch his arch rival Marquez take the chequered flag.

Unsurprisingly the crowd made their presence known when the Spaniard took the top step of the podium.

Marquez was loudly booed by Rossi's fans who make up the bulk of Sunday's crowd.

Yellow flares were set off in an attempt to sabotage the Honda rider's celebrations and make it clear he was in enemy territory.

Marquez rode a strong race and was able to pip youngster Fabio Quartararo on the final lap.

He had stalked the Yamaha rider for most of the race and was able to pass the Frenchman at the second time of asking.

  • Watch Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez in heated clash in MotoGP qualifying

Marquez is closing in on a sixth MotoGP title which would put him one behind Rossi's total.

'The Doctor' hasn't been able to add to his total for a decade and has had several run ins with Marquez since dominating the sport.

The most recent came on Saturday when the two clashed in qualifying which won't have done Marquez's popularity any favours.

Both riders were called to the stewards office, but no action was taken.

The same can't be said for some of their previous encounters which have seen both Rossi and Marquez hit the deck.

Marquez's aggressive riding style saw him push Rossi off track and into retirement at Argentina last year.

While back in 2015 the Italian kicked Marquez off his bike at Malaysia which curtailed Rossi's title attempts.

Clearly there's no love lost and his fans don't forget easily.
