Woods recorded a final round of 70 to finish the tournament on -13 a shot clear of the field.
The 43-year-old last won a major over ten years ago when he picked up the US Open at Torrey Pines in California.
His fifth Masters success comes 22 years after his first in 1997.
It takes his tally of major wins to 15 – four behind Jack Nicklaus.
Woods only topped the leaderboard on the back nine after he kept his composure while others around him faltered.
When he held the put on the 18th to seal the victory Woods’s outburst of emotion was like nothing the sport had ever seen.
Usually so composed after all his previous victories, the shouts and the cheers were reflective of the happiness he felt.
